At one time or another, we’ve all had an item or two that we were ready to part with. Whether it’s an old set of golf clubs, outdated appliances or baby furniture that you no longer have a use for, your personal expiration date came due and I’m sure you’ve found yourself wondering how to best sell these old items to make a few bucks. Here’s the “Old School” and “New School” ways of selling your stuff.
Garage Sale: Although it may be “old school”, hosting a garage sale can be a great opportunity to sell a lot of your things all at once. Make sure that you setup the garage sale lawn signs on major intersections near your neighborhood to advertise. Also, don’t be afraid to negotiate when needed!
Pawn Shop: If you’re looking for quick cash, pawn shops are the way to go. But beware! You probably won’t sell the item for as much as you were hoping for. Pawn shops are notorious for offering lesser amounts to cover their overhead.
Craigslist: The site that brought the newspaper listings to the digital world! Craigslist is free to list your items to sell and also reaches a broad range of people in your local area. According to Consumer Reports, Craigslist is the best site to list your most expensive items to sell. So not only can you sell athletic jerseys, tools and used bikes, you could also post something like your car or motorcycle.
Facebook: This is a great site to sell your items for many reasons. Everyone is on Facebook! You can join different “groups” on Facebook specifically to sell items within a certain circle. An acquaintance of mine recently listed their house for sale on Facebook and sold it the same day! No realtors, no middle man, SOLD!
EBAY: This is probably the safest way to sell your stuff. Everything is managed through the website including the payment. This takes away the hassle of setting a meeting time and place and the potential of being stood up. You set your price & post, they bid, they buy and you ship. It’s as easy as that!
LetGo: This is by far the easiest way to sell your stuff, and make money! Once you’ve made an account, take a picture of the item you’re selling, pick a category that the item falls under and write a small description of the item. LetGo will auto-populate a title description and people near you can view it. LetGo also has a chatroom in the App so you never have to give out your personal phone number.
Whether you decide to go the “Old School” or “New School” route to sell your items always make sure that you are selling wisely, and most importantly, being safe. If you sell an item and arrange to meet with someone, bring a friend with you, or make sure that you’re meeting in a public place.
Put your sales hat on, make sure you advertise your product well and start selling your stuff to make some money!
