You may have heard some buzz lately about the new iPhone X. It’s Apple’s newest phone, and it’s got a number of pretty interesting (and some might say questionable) new features. Now if you’re like me and some other people I know, it always seems like our old phones start ‘malfunctioning’ right when a new phone is released? Conspiracy? Maybe so, maybe not! But whether your phone is on its last legs, or you’re simply looking to upgrade, here’s some tips to determine if the new iPhone X makes sense for you.

How Important is It For You to Have the “Latest & Greatest”?
I have a lot of clients who are really tech savvy. They love technology and can’t wait to get their hands on new technology gear, and this includes new phones. They upgrade religiously each and every time a new release comes out. Now, personally, I find changing phones to be a big hassle, and my current phone is treating me just fine. But if you’re the kind of person that just has to have that new shiny toy to show off, then go ahead and get it!

Will You Like the New Features, or Will You Hate Them?
iPhones in particular are always somewhat polarizing when they come out. Apple tends to do away with features people really like, and add new features that people may not feel they need or want. From their perspective, they are being cutting edge. To some folks, on the other hand, it’s just a nuisance. Like their previous release that did away with wired headphone jacks. That takes some getting used to.

The new iPhone X has some new features too, such as doing away with the “home” button and creating a facial recognition system. Food for thought! But no home button can really take some getting used to, and many think it’s a big mistake to have done away with it. Be sure to try it out for yourself to see how you feel.

Will You Pay The Pricetag?
Given I’m a financial planner, I tend to think about the financial impact of items, and the new iPhone is no exception. This thing has quite the price tag on it…. I mean, seriously, it’s very expensive! The phone itself can range between $1,000 – $1,500. That’s more than some very powerful laptops cost. So while the phone might be nice, the question is, is it nice enough to fork out that kind of cash, or perhaps you should keep that money in your savings account earning interest?

It can be tempting to always upgrade our technology, especially our phones, which for many of us are now vital attachments to our bodies. Just look around and see how many people are literally glued to their mobile devices these days. When your friends and family start upgrading, you can feel the need to do so as well. But just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should. In my opinion, the new iPhone X, while neat, is too expensive for my tastes. I’d wait until the prices on this new phone drop significantly before picking one up.
